iCat Dental

What is an iCat dental scan?

It is an exam designed for scanning teeth and is performed with a specialised cone beam CT scanner.

These scans can be used to assess the feasibility of placing dental implants at specific sites, and to ensure that every possible precaution has been taken to avoid the path of adjacent nerves, or entering the  sinuses. The scan is also helpful in the assessment of previously placed implants, to look for evidence of failure.

Is it safe?

On average, the radiation dose from this procedure is a fifth of a standard CT scan of the same area.

You should always inform the radiographer if there is any possibility that you are pregnant.

Is there any preparation?

There is no preparation for this exam.

What will happen to me?

This is a very quick and painless procedure. You will be seated in a chair with your chin resting on a support and a strap to hold your head still. The machine will make a single rotation around your head and the exam is complete.

The data acquired by the scan is presented on a CD with a fully functional software programme included, giving your dental or oral surgeon the ability to manipulate, measure and print images to accommodate your dental concerns.
