DEXA Bone Density
What is a DEXA scan?
A DEXA scan measures bone density by using an enhanced form of x-ray scanning technology. It is also called dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) or bone densitometry. DEXA is today’s established standard for measuring bone mineral density (BMD).

Is it safe?
The effective radiation dose from this procedure is about 0.01 mSv. This is about the same as the average person receives from background radiation each day.
You should always inform the DEXA technician if there is any possibility that you are pregnant.
Is there any preparation?
There is no special preparation.
You will be asked to fill out a questionnaire that will help us determine if you have medical conditions or take certain medications that either increase or decrease your risk of a fracture. If you don’t receive this questionnaire in the mail with your appointment information, please arrive about 15 minutes beforehand to give you time to complete this.
What will happen to me?
Bone density tests are a quick and painless procedure taking less than 30 minutes.
The most common DEXA examination measures bone density in the hip and spine. You will lie on a padded table. An x-ray generator is located below you and a detector is positioned above.
- To assess the spine, your legs are supported on a padded box to flatten the pelvis and lower (lumbar) spine.
- To assess the hip, your foot is placed in a brace that rotates the hip inward.
In both cases, the detector is slowly passed over the area, generating images on a computer monitor.
