Our History

Pacific Radiology Ltd is the leading provider of medical imaging to the Greater Wellington Region. We operate out of 10 locations, and provide 24 hour medical imaging coverage for three private hospitals and three District Health Boards.

With a staff of close to 160, we boast the widest range of imaging modalities available in New Zealand.

The Beginning

Pacific Radiology today is the result of the merger of five smaller practices: Pacific Radiology, Wakefield Radiology, Hutt Radiology, Kapiti Radiology, and Wellington Radiology.

  • Pacific Radiology was started in Lower Hutt in 1999 by Dr Lance Lawler. Pacific Radiology has thrived and become an integral part of the new endeavour, bringing, as have the other practices, different ways of thinking and problem solving to the group.
  • Wakefield Radiology was founded in 1990 by Dr Richard Feltham. Dr Trevor FitzJohn joined in 1991. Under Dr FitzJohn’s leadership, Wakefield Radiology became one of the country’s leading imaging facilities, with many technologies new to New Zealand appearing first at Wakefield. Dr Douglas Braithwaite joined as a partner in 2000.
  • The Hutt Radiology Clinic was started in 1986 by Dr Guy Harper and Dr Roger Elmes. Dr Mark Leadbitter came on board in 1990. They grew over the following years to operate out of premises in Lower and Upper Hutt. Hutt Radiology was the first practice in the region to become an accredited facility with IANZ, a trend that has continued with all of our branches now fully accredited.
  • Kapiti Radiology was established in 1986 by Dr John Weston and Dr Donald Urquart. The practice was purchased in 1990 by Dr James Wellwood, with new premises opened in Paraparaumu in 1996 and Waikanae in 2003.

The new practice has brought together the largest group of radiologists in the region, to provide both geographical and subspecialty coverage second to none. Our equipment list would be the envy of many public hospitals.

The Group

None of this would have happened without the formation of the Pacific Radiology Group. Based in Christchurch, the parent company owns three operating subsidiaries – Pacific Radiology Ltd in Wellington, Christchurch Radiology Group, and Nelson Radiology Ltd. PRG is managed by Dr Tony Young.

The parent – subsidiary model is relatively new to radiology in New Zealand. At a national level it allows us to coordinate major equipment purchases; whilst it leaves the subsidiaries free (largely!) to run their own services locally to be more responsive to regional requirements.

As the largest radiology group in the country, PRG is in a unique position to develop as a major influence at all levels of medical imaging in New Zealand. We see this as a tremendous opportunity to promote our belief in patient-centred medicine.

As a group we also have a strong commitment to both continuing professional development and professional leadership for the specialty of radiology as a whole. Currently, the positions of RANZCR New Zealand President, Secretary, Treasurer and New Zealand Australasian Representative are filled by Pacific Radiology radiologists. Other of our radiologists sit on College Manpower, Education and New Zealand Branch Committees; as well as the Medical Licensing Advisory Committee. We also provide RANZCR examiners and professional advisors for ACC, the Health and Disability Commissioner and IANZ Accreditation.
